Window and Door Sizing                Back            Next

The illustration at left is an example of a 4040 (4’0″ x 4’0″) rough Omni Block opening. The mason must leave the minimum call out, but many times will leave up to an additional 3/8″ due to the absence of the mortar joint within the opening.

In a stucco finish application, all fiberglass, vinyl or metal windows should be ordered without fins or protruding fasteners. A nominally sized 4040 window should be ordered 3/8″ to 1/2″ undersized of the 4’0″ x 4’0″ dimension requirement.

The block module width opening for a 3′ 0″ door is 3′ 4″. A typical 3′ 0″ door with jambs call for a 3′ 2″ rough opening (2″ larger than the door call-out). Therefore, a 2′ 6″ door would fit into a 2′ 8″ block module opening.

The illustration shows the 3′ 4″ block opening with an added 3/4″ wood filler plus a 2×6 wood stud creating a 2 1/4″ door buck glued with construction adhesive, then either Tapcon countersunk and screwed while the adhesive is still pliable or a Hilti “red head” into the non hinged side of the door jamb.

Stack Bond Block

Capturing the potential aesthetics of stack bond block requires some additional thought. Notice the strategy at left to eliminate the half block. Effectively the door opening is 8″ wider and taller than the actual door call-out. A series of wood bucks are installed on both sides and above the call-out dimension.

The alternative to the above strategy is to treat the opening as though it were a standard opening and include the stack of half block on one side or the other of the door.
